Fumes extraction is desirable on all etching and anodizing tanks as the hydrogen evolves during the processes and carries fine drops of caustic soda and sulphuric acid. The ducting is normally made of PVC or polypropylene, but stainless steel has also been used in some plants. Push-pull extraction systems are sometimes used. In most areas the fumes will require scrubbing in dilute acid/alkali or in water before being released into the atmosphere.

The FREEAL system is designed to maintain the aluminium content of the solution at a constant desired value. This is achieved by drawing quantities of the acid solution from the bath, purifying and delivering back to the operating bath.

SOME OF THE ADVANTAGES OF THE FREEAL SYSTEM

  • It is possible to achieve up to 90 to 95% efficiency (depending on individual operational conditions) realizing a significant saving in acid consumption. Of course acid consumption due to drag-out remains unchanged.
  • The electrical energy required to operate the anodizing bath is reduced. (When the aluminium concentration in the solution increases, the voltage required to obtain the same current density also increases).
  • Reduced cost of disposal neutralization due to reduced acid waste.
  • Improved anodizing quality is achieved assisting with down stream processes (i.e. electrocolouring).
